How many seconds does a minute have? 60? That might be true for the rest of the country. A New York minute is only a split second long.
A saying goes that a New York minute is as long as it takes for the traffic light to turn green and the cab driver behind you starting to honk his horn. Stand at a traffic light and check how long that would be.
Nanosecond, eye-blink, split second or twinkle are different words to express the same thing as “A New York Minute”. That’s how long that would be.
New Yorkers work an average of 42.5 hours per week and commute on average 6 hours per week. That is more than in any other big city in the US.
Shopping for groceries on the other hand takes up half as much time as residents of other cities spend for this task.
More people in New York complain about stress than in any other city. What stresses them are high rents, long work hours, crammed and late subway trains, constant noise and crowded streets.
To relieve some stress creative companies offer many options: there is the Wrecking Club where you can smash glass, plates and even computer screens. Or there are nap centers where you can sleep for 30 minutes or mobile mediation trucks. Of course you’ll have to pay for all of them.
Citius, Altius, Fortius (Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger") is the motto for Olympic athletes. In a way this can be said for people in New York City too. The very high costs of living force people to work harder. And the intense peer pressure of the many talented people that compete against each other for jobs, partners or fame, make life quite stressful.
And while that might energize you for a while, it also makes people sick in the long run.
